Quick answer

A tipper truck is both a vehicle and a piece of earning equipment, and lenders look at the body, hoist and tipping gear as well as the chassis. Cost depends on the truck class, tub size, hydraulics and age. Enquiring takes about 60 seconds, with no credit check, and a real person works through the structure with you.

Key points

  • The tipper body and hoist are part of what you are financing, not an afterthought
  • Truck class, tub size and hydraulics all move the cost and the lender's view
  • Downtime is the real killer, so servicing and insurance deserve a place in the budget
  • Enquiring takes a minute with no credit check

A tipper turns a one-man dig into a one-man dig plus haul-away. It saves the cartage invoice, it lets you quote the whole job including spoil removal, and it gives landscapers, earthmovers, concreters and fencers control over timing. The flip side is that it is a heavy asset with moving hydraulic parts, and it only earns when it is on the road.

What exactly are you financing with a tipper?

Three things get bundled together, and they age differently:

  • The chassis and cab, which carry the registration and drive the vehicle rules.
  • The tipper body, meaning the tub, tailgate, sides and any liners.
  • The hoist and hydraulics, including the pump, ram and controls.

The road vehicle side is covered through Loan Finder Store, and this page concentrates on the body, tipping gear and the equipment angle: how it works, what it costs to run and how to judge whether it earns its place.

What drives the cost of a tipper setup?

We avoid listing prices, since they depend on the day and the spec. These are the levers:

  1. Truck class. A light tipper behaves very differently from a heavier rigid, in both cost and licence requirements.
  2. Tub size and material. Steel versus aluminium, length, height and wall thickness.
  3. Hoist type. Single ram or multi-stage, plus the power take-off and controls.
  4. Add-ons. Tarp systems, rear cameras, load sensors, towbars, tool boxes and lighting.
  5. Age and kilometres. Used units vary widely in wear.
  6. Compliance. Registration, inspection and any engineering for modifications.

New or second-hand: which suits a tradie?

A new tipper brings warranty and predictable hours. A used one costs less at purchase but arrives with unknowns, such as leaking rams, rusted floors and tired pumps. Before buying used, have a mechanic look over the hoist, ask for the service book and watch the tub rise under load. Our second-hand equipment finance page explains how lenders weigh age.

How do lenders see a tipper?

A lender looks at whether the asset holds its value, whether it can be re-sold and whether you can service the repayments from the work. A well-kept tipper from a popular maker is easy to re-sell, which helps. A heavily modified or very old one is harder. Your trading history, bank statements and the quote make up the rest of the picture.

Putting money down reduces the amount borrowed and helps the application, although our no-deposit equipment finance page explains that some purchases go ahead with little or none. Property owners can use it as security, with $20k to $5m available to fund a bigger fleet addition.

What does downtime cost with a tipper?

This is where tippers differ from a drill or a nail gun. A broken-down tipper stops the haul, stops the dig and can hold up a crew. Downtime has three parts:

  • Repair cost, including hydraulic hoses and ram seals.
  • Lost income, because you cannot haul or invoice.
  • Substitute cost, such as hiring cartage in the meantime.

Keep a service schedule, carry sensible cover, and hold a cash buffer so a seized hoist does not become a crisis. A flexible line of credit is one way to absorb surprises.

How does a tipper earn its keep?

Ask what it replaces and what it adds:

  • Cartage invoices you no longer pay.
  • Spoil removal you can now include in the quote.
  • Faster turnaround between dig, pour and clean-up.
  • Extra work such as hauling rubble or selling loads of material you move.

Plug your own numbers into the equipment payback calculator before you commit.

What might a tipper purchase look like?

This scenario is invented, with rounded numbers to keep the arithmetic clear.

A fencing and landscaping crew pays about $350 a week to hire cartage for rubble and soil. Over a year that is $18,200. If a tipper replaces most of those trips and the crew can quote spoil removal into jobs, the saving is spread across the year while running costs such as fuel, servicing and insurance go the other way. The question the crew asks is not whether it saves money in theory, but whether the net saving covers the repayment with room to spare. That is the number to take to a lender.

What should you ask the seller before signing?

A tipper changes hands through dealers, auctions and private sellers, and the questions are the same everywhere:

  • Can I see the service book and any hoist or hydraulic repair records?
  • Has the tub been repaired, re-skinned or lengthened, and is there paperwork for the work?
  • What is the payload on the compliance plate compared with the loads I plan to haul?
  • Are the tarp, sensors and lights included in the price or extra?
  • Is there any finance already owing on it?

Write the answers on the quote. Lenders like paperwork, and it protects you if a problem turns up later.

What about tax?

Each eligible asset under $20,000 can be written off in full under the ATO’s instant asset write-off, provided aggregated turnover is below $10 million. A complete tipper truck will normally cost more than that and be depreciated instead, while a smaller item such as a replacement hoist component might come in under the limit. Your accountant can tell you which applies, and the instant asset write-off page has the verified rules.

Curious how a tipper body could be funded? Send us the details; it takes around a minute.

How do you see if you qualify?

With a job waiting on cartage, every day counts. Our form takes about 60 seconds and you face no credit check at that first step. Your details stay with us rather than going out to lenders at large, and a real person works on your file. Be careful with your answers on turnover, trading history and any tax debt, and we can find the correct match at the first attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Do lenders finance the tipper body separately from the truck?

Sometimes the body is part of the one package, and sometimes it is fitted later and funded as equipment. Either way, an itemised quote helps the lender see what each part contributes.

Can I finance a tipper if I am a sole trader?

Yes. Sole traders can apply with an ABN, recent bank statements and a clear plan for the work. A track record of hauling jobs strengthens the case.

Is a second-hand tipper harder to finance?

It can be, depending on age and condition. Lenders look at the hoist, tub wear, service history and kilometres. A recent inspection report helps.

What if the truck is off the road for repairs?

Repayments continue while it is down, so plan for it. A cash buffer or a flexible facility, plus the right insurance, makes a breakdown survivable.

Where does the truck itself get financed?

The registered vehicle side is handled through Loan Finder Store, while the body, hoist and related gear can be arranged through us.
